I would like to have a makeover for many reasons. I think that the main reason is because as a mother I feel as though I have lost my sense of self. My self-confidence used to be great, but after having my son, I feel as though I'm 20, but trapped in a 40-year-old body with the stretch marks and stretched out skin to go along with it. I've struggled with my body image as long as I can remember. I think about how great it would be if I could feel that confidence again, but it continually feels like that idea is getting further away. With recently starting college and the expenses of having a child, I simply don't have the time or the means to care for myself the way I used to getting my hair done, having in-style clothes that actually fit and the body that went along with it all. If I were to win this contest I would be absolutely ecstatic and extremely grateful to have my wishes come true.
Occupation: Dental Assistant
I desperately need a makeover! I think I would be a good candidate because after six years of surgeries for cervical cancer (30) in all and two c-sections, I want to feel pretty again like I did back then.
I put my life on hold twice to be on bed rest to have my children. It was definitely worth it! But I want my belly back and my confidence to wear what I like and look good in what I wear.
Occupation: Executive Assistant for a networking organization for business women and women entrepreneurs.

I have now become "a woman of a certain age" and I have finally become comfortable with who I am inside. Unfortunately, the wisdom that comes with aging has taken its toll on me physically.
I want a makeover because:
Really, life is too short to feel this frumpy. I am hoping this makeover will motivate me. I would like to get back into exercising and lose weight so that I can get a breast reduction and tummy tuck next year. I have wanted the breast reduction surgery for almost 20 years and the tummy tuck for almost 10 years. At first, money was the issue but now I just want to be in better physical shape before I have "work done."
Occupation: Executive Assistant
My dear DR. CHAPIN what a wonderful thing
Granting a "NOT-SO-EXTREME" makeover
for me before Spring.
With my teeth sparsely missing, my eyes and this frown
And the neck oh, the neck is really getting me down
When what do I read in the HERALD today
A solution that would make it ALL GO AWAY!
A new face that's the ticket, for me don't you see
What an anniversary present to my husband it would be
After 58 years and the mother of two
I'm telling you Doctor it's long overdue
I'd like a new smile, fresh eyes a firm face
Is that such a bad thing to want be erased?
So please take a moment place my name on your list
Forgetting my vanity just the thought would be bliss.
You see, my anniversary is coming so please, please consider
This middle-aged woman as your possible winner.
Hi My name is Debbie and I am 62 years old. My birthday is Nov. 18, 1946. I need help!!!! I have literally not taken care of myself in 40 years. I have devoted my life to raising my two children and now I am constantly helping with their four children. In between raising children, I have worked wherever I've needed to in order to make ends meet. Currently I am working in a knitting store. Well, the time has come. It is now time for me to start taking care of myself!
Unfortunately, I have loved the sun a little too much in my life and now suffer from some major sun damage. I've even had to have numerous spots burned off from my dermatologist that have been pre-cancerous. I have a bunch of really ugly sunspots that are hard for me to even look at. I've also, unfortunately, smoked for many years of my life, which has not done my skin any favors, as I'm sure you can imagine. I've recently started learning to cook good meals and I'm just starting to exercise after a life of my only exercise being running after kids and cleaning the house. I've noticed that my energy level has been low and it's time to make a major change in my life. I need to be healthier to keep up with my little grandchildren.
I'm tired of looking like a grandmother. It's my time and I need some help. I rarely take the time to put on makeup and my hair is a big frizz ball. I'm sure there are things that I can do to help me look and feel better. I just don't know what those things might be. I look at pictures of me and my children will see pictures of me when I was younger and they say, "Wow you were so pretty!" Guess that means I'm not anymore??? Can you help me? I need to learn how to finally for once in my life take control of my life, and look and feel better. I have no idea where you would even start but I'm willing to do WHATEVER it takes. Just bring it on! I'll be your loyal patient.
My daughter is helping me with sending this in and she said that she will email a picture in of me right after I send this. (She agrees that I need major help how embarrassing.) I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate having my picture taken. They are always so awful. I hate my skin, I hate my hair. Please help!!!
Sincerely yours,
Debbie (Grandmother in need of some major help!)
For may women, achieving one’s full beauty potential can often seem like a daunting, unachievable task. With so many existing options and new techniques coming out every week, it can be very difficult to keep up with the latest trends and choices. At Chapin Aesthetics we’ve taken the “guess and stress” out of looking and feeling one’s best by taking a coordinated approach to beauty. Our individualized beauty plan was developed by a team of experienced professionals, lead by Dr. Chapin, and includes our Aestheticians, Hair designers, Make up Artist, Weight loss and Nutrition Advisor, personal trainers and life coaches. This comprehensive approach has created “buzz” locally and beyond.
In January 2008, we offered an opportunity, in the form of a contest, to 4 lucky women to take advantage of our services. Many participated in our contest, from which our winners were chosen. Our winners have just begun their journey and are excited to share their experiences with others. We’ve met with each winner and together our team has developed an individualized plan for each. We invite you to follow our winners through a 5-month program that will include a skin care consultation and treatments, a nutrition and weight loss program, hair and make-up consultation and an image and wardrobe consultation, all guided and approved by The Chapin Aesthetics team. During phase I, each of our winners will begin their weight-loss and skin care programs. Some will begin with their hair treatments. During Phase II, the winners will all get their final hair makeover and make-up consultation. They will meet with clothing specialists who will help introduce new styles into their wardrobes that best suit their individual body type and lifestyle.
Visit us often for updates on the winner’s progress and for information on our “Reveal Party and Open House” during the autumn of 2008
Let us introduce to you our winners, theirs stories and our plans to bring out their full beauty potentials.
Kristy’s mother wrote to us to tell us that Kristy is getting married during the autumn of 2008. Although Kristy is a beautiful young woman, Kristy’s mother fears that Kristy lacks the confidence to walk down the aisle looking and feeling as beautiful as she is.
Upon meeting with Kristy, we found that she struggles with acne and a small amount of hair on her upper lip. Kristy does environmental work out-of-doors and is accustomed to wearing casual clothing the majority of the time. Kristy does not currently exercise, nor does she pay attention to her eating behavior. She expressed a desire to drop a clothing size.
Our team has Kristy enrolled in our weight management program that will involve educating her on good nutrition and a healthy diet. We will work with her to add a daily exercise routine into her schedule. Studies clearly indicate that even moderate exercise not only facilitates weight-loss, but also releases endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” chemicals.
We will treat Kristy’s acne with a series of glycolic peels and microdermabrasion for maximum exfoliation. Once her acne is under control, we will begin to treat the facial hair. We have also recommended a daily skin care routine with skin care products that include Chapin aesthetics Outshine (for sun protection), Chapin Aesthetics Clear Cleanser, Neova Intense Blemish Treatment and MEG21 Smooth Radiance for moisturizing and overnight repair.
Kristy has long straight hair that is all one length. Her hair offered a unique challenge in that it has two distinct textures, with the front being fine and straight and the back being thick and curly. We plan to first
chemically straighten her hair in the back to match with the front. We will keep most of her length, but will put style in her hair by adding layers angles (and maybe a side bang). Her color plan includes keeping the color fairly natural, but we will add some hi lights and low lights throughout her head in order to brighten her up.
Kristy has also been referred to a life coach to help her with techniques she can utilize to boost her self-esteem and help her feel as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.
Tiffany is a 35 year-old mother of three who is employed in the field of childcare. Tiffany, like many women, admits that taking care of others has become a priority in her life, to the detriment of meeting her own needs. She self-started a diet and exercise program before the contest, and came to us 40 pounds lighter than she had been in the recent past. Tiffany has plans to run her first 5K in April. Despite her weight loss success, Tiffany feels she had reached a weight-loss plateau and wishes that her outside appearance could accurately reflect how good she feels on the inside.
When our team met Tiffany, it became apparent that she has little time for herself in her life. Since she works with children all day, her eating times are sporadic and she is often rushing through meals--and life. Although she has started to exercise regularly, she has been stuck at her current weight for a while. Our nutrition expert put Tiffany on a cleansing program with a sugar free and white-flour free diet in order to jump-start her weight loss. With the Nutritionist’s support, Tiffany will then begin working towards breaking her poor eating habits and introducing positive lifestyle changes.
Tiffany suffers from photo-damaged skin and chronic breakouts. We recommended a series of chemical peels for her breakouts and exfoliating her skin, which has been tanned from the time spent outdoors with the children. Once the tan is resolved, we will treat the dyschromias (sun damage) with IPL. We stress the importance of weaning a daily sun block to all our clients, including Tiffany. Tiffany’s skin care routine will include Chapin Aesthetics Outshine (for sun block), Skinceuticals CE Ferrulic, Chapin Aesthetics Clear Wash, and MEG21 Smooth Radiance for nighttime moisturizing and repair.
Tiffany came to us with significant color build-up, and an uneven haircut, which was done by a cosmetology school student. We will begin her revitalization by first deep conditioning her hair, which was damaged by Tiffany’s use of boxed hair color. We will slowly remove this build-up of color by using a very gentle lightening formulation. Once we uncover her natural color, we will add the appropriate dimensional highlights, depending on what her natural color is reveled to be! Correcting her cut will be lengthy process. We will slowly shape her hair as it grows by shifting the layers around her head.
Tiffany’s wardrobe consists of mostly casual clothing with neutral colors, suitable for working with children. She is ready and willing to step out of her comfort zone and try new styles, and our staff is ready and willing to show her the way!!
Lorraine is 48 years old and feels she has entered a stage in her life where the “O word” (a.k.a. “old”) is being used to describe how she presents herself to the world. She doesn’t feel “old” yet, but still she seems to get reminders from her children and others that her outside is not in alignment with her perception of herself. She recalled for our team a recent experience during a trip to San Francisco. A young man selling skin care products approached her and said “ I have something that will make you look younger and more beautiful”. She was shocked by this comment. Lorraine will be an “empty nester” in a few short years and feels this is a good time to start focusing on herself. She knows she cannot change her age but is confident that she can change the way she looks and subsequently feels. Her stated goal is to be able to proudly announce, on the occasion of her 50th birthday, that she “loves the way she looks, even for an old gal!”
Our team met Lorraine and was thrilled with her enthusiasm towards change. She travels frequently, thus a consistent exercise program and healthy eating has been a challenge for her. We are working with Lorraine to help her plan ahead so that when she is traveling, she makes better nutritional choices and finds ways to fit exercise into her schedule. Lorraine’s program will start with a sugar and white flour cleanse, two known contaminates in the “grab and go diet” experienced by many travelers.
Lorraine’s skin presents some premature wrinkling and appears aged beyond her years. A phenol peel by Dr. Chapin would yield the best possible results with her skin type. This procedure will serve several purposes, including tightening the skin, removing the sun damage and smoothing-out the deep, static wrinkles. Lorraine decided to pursue this course of action independently of the contest. She will be provided with the pre and post peel skincare products. When her peel has completely healed, she will be re-evaluated and her daily skincare needs updated accordingly.
Lorraine’s hair is very fine and wavy and has been badly chemically damaged by repeated bleach highlighting. As a result, she has split, broken hair pieces all over her head, causing her hair to be frizzy, dull and very dry throughout. Our plan includes getting her hair back in shape by giving her intensive protein hair reconstruction treatment once a week to rebuild and strengthen her hair. A good cut is imperative in order to restore the health of Lorraine’s hair. We will cut and shape her hair with the goal of giving her body and bounce. We have not yet fully developed her color plan, but we know it will be gorgeous!!
Bernadette provided our team with the most colorful, and probably the most universally experienced quotes of the contest: “When one has had three different hair colors in a year, been wearing the same hair style for more than 10 years, buys make-up that is rarely applied, whose skin care regimen consists of sporadic application of drug store moisturizer, has tried every diet known to man yet still needs to lose 20 pounds and relies on the same pair of black pants for the past 15 years—it’s time to make a change!”
Bernadette obviously has a great sense of humor and came to us asking for help in aligning her abundance of youthful energy with her outside appearance. She is definitely ready for a change but doesn’t know how to do it on her own.
Bernadette is a self-professed “carb addict”, which has sabotaged her diet and weight loss in the past. We recommended that she jump start her nutrition program with a complex carbohydrate cleanse in order to facilitate her weight loss and ease her carb-addiction. As luck would have it, Bernadette enjoys working out, so it shouldn’t be difficult to boost her current workout routine to make her work a little harder and more efficiently so that she may see positive results sooner. We’ll further customize her diet to re-introduce more simple carbohydrates and a healthy portion of protein. With this balance in her diet, she will be able to lose inches and weight.
Bernadette has excellent skin turgor and elasticity. She has fair, freckly skin and an extensive amount of sun damage over her face, neck, chest and arms. We will provide her with a series of photofacials every 3-4 weeks and a good skin care regimen that will consist of Skinceuticals Simply Clean, Skinceuticals CE Ferrulic, Hylunia Super Hydrating Day Lotion with SPF 15 and MEG21 Smooth Radiance for her nighttime moisturizer and repair.
Bernadette’s hair is very thick and naturally curly. She is 75% gray in the front and 100% gray in the back.
It is our goal to make her a multi-dimensional blond all over her head by following her natural color pattern. We will make her light blond in the front and darker blond in the back with brown hues throughout. We will then give Bernadette a short, stylish, sophisticated cut in order to enhance her naturally beautiful curly hair. The cut will be easy for her to style and manage on her own.
