Dr. Chapin is a highly regarded Philadelphia and Bucks County plastic surgeon. He and his staff at Chapin Aesthetics offer cosmetic surgery and non surgical enhancement procedures with unsurpassed care. Below he describes the sclerotherapy procedures.

Sclerotherapy is the practice of injecting enlarged and cosmetically undesirable veins with sclerosants, a medication that minimizes their symptoms and appearance. Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment both larger varicose veins and small “spider” veins that commonly appear after pregnancy. Sclerosants work by sticking to the inside of the diseased vein, preventing blood from flowing through it. The vein, in turn, dies and is absorbed by the body. Blood flow is then increased to the healthy veins, decreasing the symptoms of varicose veins.

Most people tolerate the treatment very well with little discomfort. The smallest of needles is used, as well as a sclerosant that contains a numbing agent, which further improves patient comfort.

Sclerotherapy has proven extremely effective in treating most spider and varicose veins. For optimal results, sclerotherapy can also be used in conjunction with laser treatments. The laser is used to eliminate the most narrow spider veins that do not respond well to injection. Both sclerotherapy and laser vein therapy are available at the Chapin Aesthetic Center. Neither therapy involves any significant downtime; in fact, patients are encouraged to resume their normal daily activities following treatment.
