What Is Liposuction?

Real Patient Result

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or liposculpture, is a body contouring procedure that extracts deposits of fat safely and effectively. As a versatile procedure, liposuction can target small pockets of stubborn fat, sculpting a sleek, trim, and toned figure. It is an ideal procedure for people who have body fat that is unaffected by diet and exercise alone.

With long-lasting results, liposuction can:

Common areas liposuction can treat includes:

As a body contouring procedure, liposuction is not intended as a weight loss substitute. Liposuction is an ideal solution for patients who are near their ideal body weight, with a BMI of 30 or less. Liposuction is a perfect complement to a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and exercise regimen to sculpt your contours.

Liposuction Techniques

During your liposuction consultation, Dr. Chapin will explain the liposuction techniques that will best allow you to accomplish your aesthetic goals based on your unique anatomy. Depending on your unique needs, Dr. Chapin may suggest:

  • Power-Assisted Liposuction uses a vibrating cannula to loosen stubborn fat. This procedure is safer, less invasive, more efficient, and gentler than traditional liposuction.
  • Tumescent Liposuction involves an injection of a solution containing lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline to reduce sensation and facilitate fat removal. It minimizes bleeding and anesthesia risks.
  • SmartLipo uses laser energy to liquify the fat prior to extraction. Laser energy also helps tighten skin during liposuction.

Preparing for Liposuction Surgery

Dr. Chapin customizes each liposuction procedure to achieve optimal results for each patient, so each procedure will be unique. Here are some common steps to expect.

Select an experienced, board-certified, and well-regarded plastic surgeon. Schedule consultations with a few surgeons to ensure you find the best match. During your consultations, request to see liposuction before-and-after photos to get an idea of the results your surgeon achieves.

During your consultation, you may be advised to get medical evaluations, blood work, or other tests to assess your overall health. At this time, you will also be instructed regarding your medications.

. If you currently smoke, vape, or use any nicotine products, you must quit. For at least four weeks prior to surgery and until recovery is complete, all nicotine products are as they can cause complications, delay recovery, and impact results. It is strongly recommended that patients stop smoking 4 weeks before and until recovery is complete.

For two weeks prior to your surgery, refrain from taking blood thinning medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements that may cause additional bleeding.

Don’t crash diet or change your diet significantly prior to surgery. However, eat healthy and balanced meals prior to your procedure as proper nutrition supports healing.

Prepare for your recovery by purchasing the supplies you’ll need and filling pain medication prescriptions. Consider cooking and freezing meals for easy preparation. Liposuction Procedure Overview

Dr. Chapin performs all liposuction procedures in a Bucks County or Montgomery County AAAASF-certified cosmetic surgery facility.

The day of your liposuction, you should arrive approximately an hour before your scheduled surgery to meet with Dr. Chapin and your anesthesia provider. Dr. Chapin and his team will review the surgery details and answer any final questions. You will be administered anesthesia as determined during your consultation.

First, Dr. Chapin will inject a tumescent solution that contains saline, epinephrine, and lidocaine into the treatment area to restrict blood loss and numb the area. This solution allows Dr. Chapin to remove fat more precisely.

Then, Dr. Chapin will make miniscule incisions that can be easily concealed in natural folds or creases of the skin. A cannula is then inserted into these incisions to loosen and extract the excess fat.

Finally, Dr. Chapin will dress the treated areas with bandages and apply a compression garment to minimize swelling. As the incisions are small, most liposuction incisions heal without stitches.

Liposuction Recovery and Healing

As liposuction is an outpatient procedure, you will need someone to drive you to and from the surgical facility and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Patients are typically released an hour or so following their procedure. Immediately following your liposuction procedure, you will be dressed in a compression garment on the treatment areas to minimize swelling and provide support to your new contours. You should wear your compression garment 4 to 6 weeks.

For several days following your procedure, the treatment areas may be uncomfortable, tender, sore, or numb. You may receive a prescription for pain medication to reduce discomfort during your liposuction recovery. Typically, patients take 3 to 5 days off work following liposuction. During this time, it’s important to get plenty of rest and eat well-balanced meals. You should avoid strenuous exercises for at least 3 weeks, but Dr. Chapin recommends short, light walks to promote circulation.

How Soon Will I See My Philadelphia Liposuction Results?

Typically, most liposuction patients notice immediate improvements in their overall figures following surgery. It may take 4 to 6 weeks for pain, swelling, and bruising to subside. As your residual swelling resolves, your final results will become visible between 3 to 6 months.

You will experience long-lasting results from your Philadelphia liposuction by maintaining your healthy diet and exercise regimen.

It is a common belief that liposuction causes fat to grow back in other areas; however, this is untrue. It is true that if you have a significant weight gain, new fat cells will develop in all areas, including the treated areas.

You may resume a normal sleeping position after liposuction.

The contour results from liposuction should last a lifetime if you maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is important to incorporate a balanced diet and exercise into your daily routine to prolong your results.

Pain varies from patient to patient. However, liposuction can cause a considerable amount of discomfort following the procedure. Most patients report the feeling of tenderness and burning sensations over the treated areas for 7-10 days postoperatively.

A tummy tuck is a great surgical option for patients with a loose abdominal muscle wall and/or excess, sagging skin due to pregnancy or weight loss. Liposuction is a contouring procedure that targets stubborn fat bulges in common areas such as the hips, abdomen and back. Liposuction does not correct excess skin or loose abdominal muscles.
