Preparing for Facelift and Neck Lift

Dr. Chapin customizes each procedure to achieve optimal results for each patient, so each procedure will be unique. Here are some common steps to expect.

Select an experienced, board-certified, and well-regarded plastic surgeon. Schedule consultations with a few surgeons to ensure you find the best match. During your consultations, request to see before-and-after photos to get an idea of the results your surgeon achieves.

During your consultation, you may be advised to get medical evaluations, blood work, or other tests to assess your overall health. At this time, you will also be instructed regarding your medications.

If you currently smoke, vape, or use any nicotine products, you should quit. It is strongly recommended that patients stop smoking 4 weeks before and until recovery is complete.

For two weeks prior to your surgery, refrain from taking blood thinning medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements that may cause additional bleeding.

Don’t crash diet or change your diet significantly prior to surgery. However, eat healthy and balanced meals prior to your procedure as proper nutrition supports healing.

Prepare for your recovery by purchasing the supplies you’ll need and filling pain medication prescriptions. Consider cooking and freezing meals for easy preparation. Arrange a clean and comfortable space to rest. Also, plan for a responsible adult to drive you home following your procedure and stay with you for at least 24 hours.

Facelift and Neck Lift Procedure Overview

Dr. Chapin performs all facelift and neck lift procedures in a Bucks County or Montgomery County AAAASF-certified cosmetic surgery facility.

The day of your facelift and neck lift, you’ll arrive approximately an hour before your scheduled surgery to meet with Dr. Chapin and your anesthesia provider. Dr. Chapin and his team will review the surgery details and answer any final questions, then you will be administered anesthesia.

Dr. Chapin will create discreet facelift incisions along the hairline and ears and potentially in the scalp. He uses these incisions to reposition and tighten facial tissues and underlying muscles while removing loose, excess skin and fat. Dr. Chapin will drape the skin so that it fits more precisely over the underlying structures, then close and dress the incisions.

For neck tightening, Dr. Chapin will create your neck lift incisions in well-concealed areas behind the ear, posterior hairline, or under the chin. Then, Dr. Chapin will lift and tighten neck muscles, remove excess skin and fat, and redefine your jawline and chin.

Depending on your procedural plan, facelifts and neck lifts typically last three to four hours.

Facelift and Neck Lift Recovery and Healing

Following your facelift or neck lift, you may experience swelling, bruising, discomfort, or numbness. These side effects should gradually improve over the next 6 weeks. You will be prescribed pain medication to alleviate discomfort.

For the first 3 to 5 days, it is essential to keep your head elevated without bending, lifting, or engaging in any strenuous activities to minimize swelling and bruising. In 3 to 7 days, Dr. Chapin will remove your stitches and provide instructions for optimal facelift recovery.

Depending on the extent of your facelift or neck lift, plan to take one to two weeks off work. Most patients can return to work within 10 to 14 days. However, for the next 4 weeks, you should avoid strenuous activities.

How Soon Will I See My Facelift and Neck Lift Results?

The healing process is determined by the extent of your Philadelphia facelift or neck lift. For the first few weeks, you can expect bruising, tightness, and swelling that may obscure your results. As your face and neck heal and swelling dissipates, your new contours will improve, usually within one month. Residual swelling may take 6 to 12 months to subside.

With optimal results and thorough follow-up care, your facelift and neck lift results will provide a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance that will last 10 to 15 years. Maintaining your healthy lifestyle and weight and taking care of your skin by avoiding sun exposure will help ensure your long-lasting results.

FAQ

Facelift Philadelphia, PA

Always do your research prior to coming in for a cosmetic consultation. You will want to find an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon whom you can trust and connect with. Identify your area(s) of concern and make note of topics you wish to address with the doctor. Keep in mind there are many treatment options for facial rejuvenation that can be performed in conjunction with a facelift. These include brow lift, upper/lower blepharoplasty, lip lift, fat transfer, and chemical peels. The more comprehensive you are, the better the surgeon can suggest a surgical plan custom to meet your goals. We encourage questions ahead of your one-to-one consultation day, so you can plan financially and logistically.

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for surgery is to plan ahead. You will need to coordinate a ride to and from the surgery center and have a support person stay with you the first 24 hours postoperatively. It is important that you have help with household tasks such as cooking meals, cleaning, and caring for children and pets for the first 7 days post operatively.

A standard facelift procedure takes approximately 4 hours.

Most people who have facelifts are in their 50s and 60s.

There are many options to improve the overall appearance of your face including dermal fillers, neurotoxins (Botox and Dysport), fat injections, chemical peels, dermabrasion and lasers. These treatments are non to minimally invasive procedures that can be effective in improving skin tone and texture and in restoring facial volume. However, they will not give you the same dramatic result as a surgical facelift.

A liquid facelift is the use of dermal fillers injected into the skin to add and restore volume and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is a subtle way to achieve facial rejuvenation. Undoubtedly, a traditional facelift will result in a much more drastic result. A surgical facelift will tighten the skin of the neck, jowls, and cheeks, as well as the underlying muscles.

Minimizing sun exposure and maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle are great ways to care for you and your skin. Chapin Aesthetics strongly recommends taking advantage of the complimentary skin care consultation and facial once you are healed. You will meet with one of our experienced aesthetic nurses who will design a skin care regimen tailored to your needs to ensure you are taking the correct steps to prolong your facelift results.

Most patients are socially acceptable and feel comfortable to go out in public 7-14 days after a facelift.

You will be encouraged to engage in light activities (walking, stationary bikes) 3-5 days after surgery. You will be able to perform your full range of activities 3-4 weeks post operatively.

Most patients are socially acceptable 7-14 days after a facelift. You should physically be able to return to the office within that time frame. Patients that work from home can return within 48 hours.

For your safety, you are not a candidate for a facelift procedure if you are currently smoking. You must stop smoking for 4 weeks prior and 4 weeks after your planned surgery.

Risks are as included on the ASPS consent form regarding facelift and neck lift. Risks include bleeding, infection, sensory and motor nerve injuries, contour deformities, skin loss, poor scarring.
