What Is mJOULE?

The mJOULE platform features both a 1927nm fractional laser treatment (MOXI) as well as a powerful broadband light BBL® HERO device. Treatments with mJOULE can be fully customized. MOXI and BBL® can be performed on their own as standalone treatments, or they can be combined.

It’s recommended that patients have combined MOXI/BBL® treatments whenever possible, since the two options have synergistic effects and target different types of concerns.

One of the other major advantages of the MOXI/BBL® device is that it can be safely used on any area of the body.

What Is BBL HERO?

BBL® HERO is a next-generation broadband light device by Sciton that is renowned for being the most powerful intense pulsed light device in the world. BBL® HERO is highly effective for sun-damaged skin on the body. Large areas can be treated quickly and with minimal discomfort. BBL® HERO gives off photothermal energy that gently heats the skin and targets cells to give it a younger appearance. It corrects imperfections on the skin’s surface as well as deep-rooted pigmentation problems.

Note that BBL® HERO is a light treatment as opposed to a laser, and is mainly used to clear up abnormal pigmentation—but it is often used for other conditions such as cystic acne. It can be used to tighten skin or target broken capillaries. The light energy from BBL® HERO is gentler for the skin compared to lasers and chemical peels.

What Is MOXI?

MOXI is a preventative skin care approach that can treat large areas with non-ablative laser energy. It can be adjusted for gentle, low- energy treatments for patients seeking prejuvenation, those who have melasma, or darker skin tones.

Higher energy treatments that provide more coverage and increased skin cell turnover are also possible with the mJOULE device. MOXI delivers laser energy that creates columns of thermal damage in the skin while leaving microscopic columns of untreated tissue in the treatment area to speed up healing. By promoting the wound healing process in the body and stimulating collagen production, it can correct tone and texture irregularities of the skin. MOXI works better on darker skin tones compared to BBL® HERO.

Am I A Candidate For MOXI/BBL Hero?

There has been an increased demand for preventative and prejuvenation cosmetic treatments in recent years. The term “prejuvenation” refers to treatments that are focused on preventing or delaying signs of aging for as long as possible rather than aiming to correct them after they occur.

Patients have begun using non-invasive treatments at an earlier age to prevent sun damage, wrinkles, and skin sagging. MOXI is specifically designed for prejuvenation or light touch-ups or revitalization to maintain the skin. It’s excellent for anyone wanting to brighten and refresh their appearance.

By combining BBL® HERO and MOXI, mJOULE is suitable for patients from all age demographics, including younger patients who are interested in prejuvenation, as well as older patients who are seeking corrective treatments. MOXI can be ideal for patients who want to be proactive about anti-aging treatments, but it can also address specific concerns: pigmentation and sun damage, uneven skin tone and texture, and signs of aging. The device treats existing but minor signs of aging or prevents their formation in the first place.

mJOULE can also be beneficial for those who have more extensive sun damage, fine lines, and pigmentation irregularities. mJOULE can be utilized for a single, targeted treatment or be performed regularly as part of a long-term skincare plan. mJOULE treatments are safe for all skin types, ages, and seasons.

How Do I Prepare For MOXI/BBL Treatments?

Getting your skin ready for a MOXI/BBL HERO session is important. Before you have an mJOULE treatment, the Chapin Aesthetics team will assess your medical history and discuss your expectations. You may be asked to avoid taking certain medications and supplements including aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E for 10 days prior to your treatment. Let the team know if you have the tendency to get cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth. Skin resurfacing treatments like MOXI/BBL could trigger breakouts.

Don’t smoke for at least two weeks prior to a MOXI/BBL® session, since the nicotine and tobacco can prolong the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Limit sun exposure as much as possible both before and after this treatment. You should refrain from applying self-tanner prior to MOXI/BBL®. A tan on your skin will make it more difficult for the mJOULE devices to work and increase the risk of burns. Sometimes, it may be recommended that you have a light chemical peel two to three weeks before a MOXI/BBL® treatment to remove dead skin.

What Happens During MOXI/BBL Treatment?

BBL® HERO has a treatment time of just 10 to 30 minutes. No anesthesia is required. The handpiece is gently glided over the skin, and most patients won’t experience much—if any—discomfort. It’s common to have a warm sensation on the skin for 30 to 60 minutes after the procedure. MOXI treatments last for a duration of just 12 to 15 minutes for a full-face treatment. Anesthetic cream is sometimes needed for more aggressive treatments that yield more dramatic results.

mJOULE treatments are quick and comfortable with little to no downtime. They can fit into an active lifestyle at any part of the year. For this reason, they can be a great laser resurfacing option for patients who want to revitalize their skin with less downtime.

Your skin will ultimately look refreshed and vibrant, but right after a MOXI session, your skin may have a sandpapery texture for a few days while it is healing. The results from BBL® HERO will become apparent in around two to three weeks, and one to three treatment sessions may be needed to optimize results. A series of three to four MOXI treatments may be needed to start with, followed by annual visits after that to maintain the skin’s appearance and texture.

MOXI can provide a more youthful glow to the skin for a full year if the treatment is combined with BBL® HERO and aftercare instructions are followed. Give your skin some downtime and limit sun exposure after BBL® HERO, especially if you combine it with MOXI.

Other Laser Treatments At Chapin Aesthetics

MOXI and BBL® HERO complement many other common non-surgical aesthetic treatments. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are available to remove dead skin from the surface and restore a more even skin tone. Laser skin resurfacing is also available for improving the appearance of the skin. Injectable JUVEDERM® and Restylane® soften static wrinkles by filling in space below the surface. Discuss the ideal combination of treatments for you with our team by scheduling an appointment.
