LABIAL RESHAPING CAN MAKE A WOMAN MORE COMFORTABLE WITH HER BODY

Giving birth to a child and the aging process can cause many different changes in a woman’s body. One such change that many women experience is a loosened vagina. At times, the vagina not only loses its elasticity, but also becomes insensitive. This can greatly affect a woman’s confidence, but through a cosmetic procedure known as labiaplasty at the Philadelphia area’s Chapin Aesthetics, this situation can be corrected.

Labia refers to the skin folds that surround the vagina. The larger skin folds are called the labia major while the smaller skin folds are called the labia minor. Enlarged labia can be the cause of much pain and discomfort. Labiaplasty essentially involves making the labia smaller and correcting any asymmetry if it exists.

PREPARING FOR THE SURGERY

When you have decided to opt for a labiaplasty, make sure you get the procedure done by a board-certified medical professional. The vagina is a sensitive, infection prone area and the surgery should be performed with the utmost care and precision.

You will be asked to quit smoking during the weeks leading up to the surgery and to also stay away from certain medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen. These drugs have a tendency to prolong bleeding and may cause difficulties during the surgery. You may be asked to shave the area and shower beforehand. Antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications will be prescribed to avoid the risk of infections during the procedure.

During your consultation, you should make sure to provide your doctor with your medical history and discuss any diseases or allergic reactions to certain medications that you may have. You should also discuss your goals and expectations.

Your surgeon will give you a detailed overview of the procedure and decide on the technique to be used depending on your individual needs. Ask any questions you might have pertaining to the surgery beforehand so that you remain confident during the entire process.

THE PROCEDURE

Patients undergoing a labiaplasty are usually given the option of choosing between either local anesthesia or general anesthesia. You will remain conscious during the procedure with only your vaginal area numbed if you choose local anesthesia, and with general anesthesia, you will be unconscious throughout the treatment.

A labiaplasty usually takes about one hour to perform. Your doctor will choose from a number of available techniques depending on your needs. One of the techniques is known as the trim method where excess tissue is removed from the labia minora. Another technique called the wedge method involves making incisions across the width of the labia in order to reduce its size. Once this is done, the incisions are sutured.

POST-OPERATIVE CARE

After the procedure, you will receive exceptional and comprehensive care following your procedure to ensure optimal comfort. It is common to experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort for the first few days after the procedure. You can use ice packs and oral medication to help alleviate any discomfort you may experience.

You will need to take up to a week off from work and avoid strenuous exercises for up to four weeks to ensure proper recovery. Your doctor will provide you with postoperative instructions that you will need to follow during that time. The results of a labiaplasty can be noticed almost immediately and improve with time.
