THE DOS AND DON’TS OF FOREHEAD BOTOX®

One of the most common uses for BOTOX® near Doylestown, PA, is softening the appearance of forehead wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles—like the horizontal lines on your forehead and the web-like crinkles around your eyes—can show up in people as young as their mid-30s or even 20s. The area around the eyes where the skin tends to stretch when facial expressions (such as smiling and squinting) are made is usually one of the first places where wrinkles to show up. This is because it’s normal for the skin to stop producing as much collagen and elastin over time, and therefore be less springy than it was when it was younger. Because of this, it forms wrinkles more easily as it is constantly pulled and stretched by facial muscles. Sun damage and emotional stress can also create conditions that make horizontal forehead wrinkles more prominent.

BOTOX® is FDA-approved for treating three specific conditions: moderate to severe frown lines (known as glabellar lines), forehead lines, and crow’s feet. The injectable is derived from botulinum toxin type A, a protein that temporarily relaxes active facial muscles. Here are some tips our Chapin Aesthetics team recommends for minimizing risk of complications and achieving the optimal aesthetic results from forehead BOTOX®.

DO

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PROVIDER

It’s best to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon or registered nurses, nurse specialists, and physician’s assistants supervised by plastic surgeons in order to maximize both safety and beautiful, natural-looking results. Take the time to search for someone who has the training, skills, and qualifications to administer BOTOX®.

LOOK AFTER YOUR SKIN

Sun exposure damages the skin’s collagen and elastin fibers. After a BOTOX® session, be sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen each day, stay out of the sun as much as possible (especially during peak hours), and wear hats or sunglasses to protect your skin. You may also want to consider using techniques such as meditation and sleeping more to manage the emotional stress that can lead to wrinkles. Moisturize and exfoliate frequently to maintain healthy skin.

DON’T

OVERDO BOTOX®

The injection dosage is important for BOTOX®. If too much is used, it may cause the eyebrows to droop or become asymmetrical. For this reason, injectors usually take a conservative approach and only use a low-unit dosage during your first treatment, when schedule follow-up appointments to learn the dosage that is most suitable for you. Up to 20 units can be applied for these wrinkles.
