Surgical Fat Removal For Shapelier Contours In The Philadelphia Area
It is not uncommon to struggle with stubborn pockets of fat despite an active lifestyle and healthy diet. Persistent fat deposits can accumulate almost anywhere on the body, including the hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, back, upper arms, neck, and chin. Having one or more of these problem areas is especially frustrating for those who are healthy, active and are at—or just slightly above—their ideal body weight, but still cannot get rid of localized excess fat. These trouble zones that are resistant to diet and exercise can be extremely bothersome for anyone who makes a healthy lifestyle a priority in life, which is why liposuction at the Philadelphia area’s Chapin Aesthetics is such a popular choice for body contouring.

Our Customized Approach To Liposuction
To maximize results, liposuction is commonly performed in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, or a Mommy Makeover. During your consultation, Dr. Scott Chapin will listen to your concerns and recommend the best surgical treatment plan to meet your aesthetic goals
Dr. Chapin offers a range of liposuction techniques and will recommend a body contouring strategy based on individual factors such as a patient’s unique anatomy, aesthetic goals, and cosmetic concerns for liposuction surgery. When appropriate, he uses tumescent local anesthesia during the surgicalprocedure to facilitate fat removal, as well as to minimize bleeding and the risks related to general anesthesia. He may also employ laser energy (i.e., Smart Lipo) to remove fat and help tighten skin during liposuction.
Dr. Chapin will first inject the tumescent solution comprised of saline solution (sterile saltwater), epinephrine (to contract blood vessels, restricting blood loss), and lidocaine (a local anesthetic) into the targeted area. This causes the area to swell and become firm, allowing him to remove fat with more precision.
He then makes a miniscule incision in the targeted area, in a location that is not easily noticeable. A cannula (a small, hollow tube) is inserted through this incision to loosen and then suction out excess fat. When Dr. Chapin has completed the surgical procedure, he dresses the treated area or areas with bandages and may use a compression garment to minimize swelling. Because they are so small, any incisions will heal on their own without the need for stitches.
Am I A Candidate For Liposuction?
Liposuction is not appropriate for everyone. For instance, those with excess fat and poor skin elasticity may benefit from abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck” surgery), an arm lift, or lower body lift surgery instead of liposuction alone.
To find out if you are a suitable candidate for liposuction, you should schedule a consultation with a knowledgeable plastic surgeon such as Dr. Chapin, who can evaluate your medical history and aesthetic concerns to determine the best surgical treatment plan to meet your unique needs.
Ordinarily, however, suitable liposuction candidates include people who:
- Are at or just slightly above their ideal body weight, but who have pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise
- Are not looking to lose a major amount of weight, restore skin elasticity, or necessarily treat cellulite
- Have good skin elasticity
- Are in sound overall physical and mental health
- Have realistic expectations for the outcome of liposuction surgery
- Do not smoke or are willing to cease smoking for several months before and after surgery
The Day Of Your Liposuction Procedure
Since patient comfort is a priority, you are placed under local or general anesthesia. There are two possible places a liposuction procedure may be performed: in Dr. Chapin’s office facility or at a Bucks or Montgomery County AAAA-certified facility. Liposuction at the office facility would be an outpatient procedure, while the other option involves general anesthesia. The choice will depend on whether you are having liposuction performed as a single treatment or in conjunction with other procedures.
The day of the surgery involves a meeting with Dr. Chapin and his team for a procedure review to ensure your questions are answered. The liposuction procedure itself takes about an hour to three hours to perform, depending on the technique used and how many areas are being treated, as well as several other factors.
Patients are typically discharged an hour or so after liposuction surgery and will need to have a responsible adult drive them to and from the procedure. The treated area may be tender, sore, or numb right after the procedure. Some patients may notice fluid drainage from the incision site(s) for about 12 hours after the surgery.
Generally, it takes four weeks for pain, swelling, and bruising to subside, with the final results visible three to six months following liposuction. We recommend that patients plan to take three to five days off of work and to avoid any strenuous activity—including exercise—for a minimum of three weeks or as directed by Dr. Chapin. In addition, getting plenty of rest and eating well-balanced meals during the initial recovery period will help the body heal faster.
Dr. Chapin equips each patient with pre- and post-operative care instructions and will monitor them so he can advise them on when they can gradually resume their normal daily activities.Following these instructions to a tee will maximize the aesthetic benefits of liposuction and minimize possible complications.
Other Body Contouring Options Available In The Philadelphia Area
Liposuction is one of many plastic surgery procedures that Dr. Chapin offers. In addition to body contouring procedures like liposuction and abdominoplasty, he also offers facial rejuvenation procedures such as facelift surgery, as well as breast surgery, including breast enhancement with implants.
Fat carefully removed via liposuction can be used to add volume elsewhere on the body via fat injections. When used together, these two procedures can create desired contours by slimming down one region and emphasizing another.
While liposuction delivers reliable results, not every person who wants to address pockets of fat is ready for surgery. Dr. Chapin also offers SculpSure®, which reduces the number of fat cells in a targeted area by damaging them with heat. This treatment involves only laser energy—no incisions required.
