What Are Glycolic Peels?

Glycolic acid is part of the alpha hydroxy family of natural ingredients, which is derived from sugar cane. These superficial chemical peels remove the top layer of skin to trigger collagen and elastin production. Glycolic peels improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, skin discoloration, and texture. When the outer layer is removed, a new layer of skin becomes visible. We offer varying strengths of glycolic acid peels that rejuvenate the skin to treat a variety of skin concerns.

SkinMedica Illuminize Peel

Give your skin an instant glow with this superficial, zero down time chemical peel. This is the perfect choice to achieve a radiant look prior to an event or to simply brighten the appearance of your skin. This non-invasive peel utilizes alpha-hydroxy acids (mandelic and malic acid) in conjunction with phytic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol to maximize skin-rejuvenating effects without irritation.

SkinMedica Vitalize Peel

This medium-strength peel targets sign of aging, melasma, and sun-damaged and acne-prone skin. The proprietary blend of ingredients achieves improvement in texture, tone, pigmentation, acne, melasma, and collagen production. For optimal correction, the Vitalize Peel® should be performed monthly until the desired result is achieved. Skin will begin to shed two days after the peel is applied and will peel for approximately three days.

SkinMedica Rejuvenize Peel

The Rejuvenize Peel is the strongest of the three SkinMedica® peels and offers substantial improvements in fine lines, texture, tone, pigmentation, and acne. Significant visible improvements are produced and are ideal for those patients who have established tolerability to the Vitalize Peel®. Mild redness and irritation is common with the Rejuvenize Peel, but will usually resolve within seven days. Peeling will begin two to three days post treatment and will last for approximately five days.

Phenol Peel

The phenol peel is a powerful chemical peel that is utilized as a skin resurfacing technique to remove the outer layers of the facial skin. This peel penetrates deep into the skin to allow new, healthier skin to emerge. A phenol peel is often recommended to treat the signs of severely sun-damaged and rough textured facial skin. Pigment concerns can be corrected, including hyperpigmentation, age-related brown spots, and blotchiness. Fine lines, wrinkles, and even profound facial creases can be significantly reduced with a phenol peel treatment. Phenol is particularly useful for improving the crepe-wrinkled skin below the lower eyelids or for minimizing the vertical lines that often form around the mouth as a result of aging. A more youthful, rejuvenated appearance of the skin can be achieved with a phenol peel.

Phenol Peel Can:

What Happens During Your Chemical Peel Treatment?

Your procedure can be performed as an outpatient procedure at our Doylestown office or under general anesthesia at a Bucks County or Montgomery County AAA-certified facility. Generally, a phenol peel treatment takes one to two hours to perform. The location and length of the procedure will be determined by how many procedures, if any, have been elected to be performed simultaneously. On the day of your procedure, Dr. Chapin and his highly trained team will meet with you to review all details and answer any questions before surgery. You will receive exceptional and comprehensive care following your procedure to ensure your comfort.

Chemical Peel Recovery

For the first five to seven days post treatment, your skin will be dry, red, and flaky. It is common to experience stinging and/or tightness. An ointment such as Aquaphor will be administered to the area for comfort and to promote healing. After the peeling subsides, the redness may be present for about four to six weeks, but this can easily be camouflaged with makeup. These side effects will gradually subside. Generally, at the two-week mark, you will begin to see the results of your treatment, and they will continue to improve. If you experience any post-operative discomfort, Dr. Chapin will prescribe oral pain medication for relief. You should rest and relax during your recovery, avoiding any strenuous activities. Dr. Chapin will provide complete preoperative and postoperative care instructions. He will monitor and advise when patients can gradually resume their daily activities, including exercise.
