SCULPTRA®

FULL-FACE REJUVENATION WITH COLLAGEN STIMULATORS FOR THE PHILADELPHIA AREA

Collagen, the most abundant protein in the body, is what gives skin strength and structure. Elastin is another important component that gives the skin a supple quality. When levels of these components diminish because of aging, the skin becomes thinner and less firm. Sculptra® at the Philadelphia area’s Chapin Aesthetics is a “biostimulatory filler,” which means it stimulates natural collagen production ideal for restoring volume that has been lost from the face.

Because the body makes its own collagen in response to injections, the rejuvenating results are subtle, natural looking, and long-lasting.

WHAT ARE SCULPTRA® FILLERS?

Our facial shape and structure changes noticeably as we age. High cheekbones, plump cheeks, and a slim jawline are traits associated with a youthful face, but all three can be altered by time.

As we get older, the face loses both fat and collagen, causing the temples, under-eye areas, and cheeks to become sunken and hollow. At the same time, as fat migrates downward and skin sags, the lower face may develop a heavier appearance.

Sculptra® fillers are a non-surgical way to provide volume and lift to enhance the appearance of the face—but they work differently from hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm®, Restylane®, and RHA®.

Biostimulatory fillers contain poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA, a synthetic, biodegradable substance used for creating sutures) as their main active ingredient. Instead of the volumizing effect coming from the filler itself, Sculptra® works on the deep underlying structure of the skin to promote production of the skin’s natural collagen, enhancing facial volume and reducing wrinkles. The result is a younger-looking appearance as lines, creases, and folds are reduced.

WHICH AREAS CAN SCULPTRA® FILLERS TARGET?

Sculptra® can be used on multiple areas to rejuvenate the entire face. It’s ideal for signs of aging such as the smile lines, hollowed cheeks, a poorly defined jawline, and sunken temples. The biostimulator is most commonly used to reduce smile lines, marionette lines, and chin wrinkles.

Since it can treat the entire face, it’s best for restoring a more youthful look to faces that have become thinner and gaunter due to aging. Note that Sculptra® is not recommended for use around the eyes or on the lips.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR SCULPTRA®?

Ideal candidates include patients older than 18 who are seeking a safe, effective, and long-lasting treatment for cosmetic concerns. Patients who want to rejuvenate their whole face as opposed to specific areas can benefit from Sculptra®. You should not have this filler if you are immunocompromised, are prone to keloid scarring, or have allergies to any of its ingredients. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding should seek a treatment other than Sculptra®.

SCULPTRA® PREPARATION

In your consultation at Chapin Aesthetics, you will discuss your medical history, including any medical conditions you may have and any allergies. Avoid taking blood thinners and alcohol for one day before your appointment in order to minimize bruising.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SCULPTRA® TREATMENT?

Sculptra® treatments are performed in the Chapin Aesthetics office. After cleansing the skin, the planned injection sites will be mapped out. A topical anesthetic will be applied to the site of injection, and then the filler will be added to the predetermined areas. A series of small injections are made into the skin, with each one feeling like nothing more than a tiny pinch.

SCULPTRA® SIDE EFFECTS AND RECOVERY

It’s safe to resume your normal activities as soon as you would like after Sculptra®. You will receive aftercare instructions and information about what to watch for in the coming days. The most common side effects are mild bruising and swelling that will shortly resolve on their own. Cold compresses can help to provide relief from swelling and other side effects.

Patients should avoid too much exposure to sunlight, alcohol, makeup application, and strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours. Also, sleep in an elevated position and avoid touching or moving the treatment area excessively.

Unlike some fillers, the results from Sculptra® won’t appear right away. Collagen production is gradual. The skin will gradually improve within several weeks, and the effects from Sculptra® may last for up to two years.
