Dermabrasion Philadelphia

The texture of the skin changes as the years go by, and it is common to see an increase in fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and raised scars on the face. These common skin concerns can be caused by the natural aging process, sun damage, genetics, and lifestyle choices. Dr. Scott D. Chapin can drastically turn back the hands of time to create a smooth appearance through dermabrasion, a method of controlled surgical scraping, to eliminate the signs of aging. This skin refinishing procedure can be performed over the entire face or in small sections, depending on each patient’s individual goals.

Dermabrasion Can:

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Diminish acne scars and raised scars
  • Smooth the surface of the skin
  • Create a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance

Our Customized Approach

Dr. Chapin will listen carefully to all of your cosmetic concerns, and he will create a customized approach that is best suited to meet your aesthetic goals. During the dermabrasion procedure, Dr. Chapin will scrape away the outer layer of the skin with a motorized wire brush to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and any other skin irregularities until they are diminished or made as discreet as possible.

To maximize results, other facial procedures such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, and chemical peels are commonly performed in conjunction with dermabrasion. Dr. Chapin will customize a detailed plan that is best suited to achieve your aesthetic goals.

The Day of Your Procedure

Your procedure can be performed with a local anesthetic at our Doylestown office or under general anesthesia in an outpatient facility. On the day of your procedure, Dr. Chapin and his highly trained team will meet with you to review all details and answer any questions before surgery. Generally, dermabrasion takes under an hour to perform. You will receive exceptional and comprehensive care following your procedure to ensure your comfort.

Dermabrasion Recovery

You may experience redness, swelling, stinging, and discomfort or pain following the procedure. Oral pain medication will help relieve these symptoms during the initial recovery period, and they will taper during the healing process. The swelling will begin to subside in a few days to a week. As the skin begins to heal, a scab or crust will form over the treated area. A new layer of rejuvenated skin will appear as the scabs fall off the skin. It is common for ointment to be prescribed to alleviate any itching that may develop during this time. For several weeks following the procedure, your new skin will be sensitive, pink, and swollen.

We recommend that patients wait two weeks before returning to work and daily activities. Light exercise can begin two to three weeks post procedure, and high impact activities can resume at four to six weeks. It is imperative to protect your skin from the sun for six months to a year while the pigment is returning to your skin. Dr. Chapin will provide instructions for both preoperative and post procedure care that will minimize complications and maximize your aesthetic benefits. The results will continue to improve for the next three to 12 months.
