Intense Pulsed Light for Facial Rejuvenation in the Philadelphia Area

Over time, you may notice that the tone and color of your skin becomes marred by age spots, redness, freckles, and other pigmentation concerns. Intense pulsed light (IPL) at the Philadelphia area’s Chapin Aesthetics is the gold standard for drastically improving the clarity, tone, and texture of the skin. IPL technology utilizes multiple wavelengths of light to penetrate through the skin for rejuvenation starting at the deepest level. Our skin care specialists safely and effectively target a wide range of skin concerns with advanced intense pulsed light technology—also known as a Photofacial—on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and other areas.

IPL Photoplane is a customized IPL Photofacial treatment produces that involves a dermaplane treatment prior to the application of intense pulsed light. Dermaplaning is a safe, non-abrasive treatment that utilizes a scalpel to exfoliate the epidermis of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair known as “peach fuzz,” which allows the IPL to penetrate deeper into the skin for superior results. Similarly, the IPL PhotoPeel treatment generates results by starting with a mild glycolic peel. This superficial chemical peel removes the top layer of skin to trigger collagen production, reduce pore size, and improve overall skin texture. The exfoliation process also makes it easier for the intense pulsed light to impact deeper layers in the skin.

Our Customized Approach to an IPL Photofacial

One of our skin care specialists will discuss your concerns with you during your consultation and will provide you with a customized treatment plan based on your aesthetic goals. Typically, most patients require two or more intense pulsed light sessions to achieve optimal results. The IPL device will emit a high intensity blast of light that penetrates the surface of the skin to the deeper level of the dermis. This light is absorbed by specific pigments in the skin, such as blood in vascular lesions or melanin in pigmented lesions. The heat generated in this process causes unwanted veins to collapse and spots to flake away. It also stimulates collagen and connective tissue for a younger, more rejuvenated appearance.

The Day of Your IPL Photofacial Treatment

Prior to your IPL Photofacial treatment, your eyes will be shielded with a protective eye shield and a topical anesthetic will be applied to numb the area being treated and minimize discomfort. Ice and antibiotic cream will be applied to the treated area after the session.

For an IPL Photoplane session, the skin is held taut as light strokes are made across it with a scalpel at a 45- degree angle, revealing brighter and smoother skin. The PhotoPeel starts with an application of glycolic acid to remove dead skin cells. After either of these treatments, your skin will then be prepped for the IPL Photofacial as usual.

IPL Photofacial Recovery

Intense pulsed light treatments do not damage the top layer of skin, so recovery time is minimal to nonexistent. Some patients may experience mild swelling or redness after their treatment, but these effects quickly subside. It is critical to use sunscreen to protect the treated areas from ultraviolet radiation.

Sessions that involve exfoliation prior to the light treatment will require a little time for healing.
