Microneedling
PROMOTE COLLAGEN PRODUCTION TO RESTORE HEALTHIER SKIN IN THE PHILADELPHIA AREA
As your skin ages, it produces less collagen and elastin, so it becomes thinner, weaker, and more susceptible to damage. In addition to changes caused by normal aging, other factors can take a toll on the skin, including exposure to sunlight, air pollution, weather fluctuations, harsh chemicals, and stress. Microneedling at the Philadelphia area’s Chapin Aesthetics is a minimally invasive treatment that improves the tone and texture of the skin by prompting renewed collagen production.
This groundbreaking procedure, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), is designed to treat common skin imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, acne scars, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone and texture.
WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?
Microneedling is an innovative cosmetic treatment that utilizes multiple fine, sterilized needles to penetrate the skin, resulting in collagen remodeling and skin rejuvenation. The miniscule areas of trauma encourage the deeper layer of skin to rebuild itself. Specifically, the tiny injuries from the needles pricking the skin during microneedling encourage your body to produce more collagen and elastin. These proteins are made to patch up what the skin reads as tiny injuries, ultimately keeping your skin firm and smooth.
A microneedling session triggers a process that helps your skin to heal and appear younger. The most common skin concerns addressed with collagen induction therapy are fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, other scars, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone and texture. This treatment can be performed on the face.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR MICRONEEDLING?
One of the key benefits to microneedling is that it is a non-ablative skin treatment, which means the deeper part of the skin is able to be treated without removing the top layer.
Individuals may not be good candidates for microneedling if they have acne or are taking medications for acne, have a blood disorder or are on anticoagulants, have cancer and are receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy, have frequent skin rashes or cold sores, tend to get keloid scars, or have other skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.
Patients who have extremely sensitive skin should also avoid this treatment.
THE DAY OF YOUR MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT
Prior to your microneedling appointment, you’ll have a consultation, during which your skin will be examined, your health history will be reviewed, and we will discuss your goals. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the treatment.
Before the session begins, your provider will clean your skin and then apply a numbing cream or ointment for at least 30 to 45 minutes so that you won’t feel pain from the tiny needles. The microneedling device is gently rolled across the skin. It’s normal to feel a warm or scratching sensation. Sometimes there will be minor bleeding from the small pinpricks.
A session will usually take just 10 to 20 minutes to be completed, but it can sometimes last longer, depending on how large the treatment area is.
MICRONEEDLING RESULTS, SIDE EFFECTS, AND RECOVERY
Visible results can be seen two to four days after a microneedling treatment and results will continue to progress as the body’s natural collagen regenerates. There is no downtime associated with microneedling, and regular activities—including exercise—can be resumed right away after treatment. It’s common to have some mild side effects like burning, tightness, dryness, and flaking.
Try to keep your skin calm after this procedure and avoid irritation. It’s best to avoid washing your skin, exposing it to high heat, or sweating too much for the remainder of the day following a session. Although the skin may look plumper and more luminous for several weeks, microneedling will also provide long-term improvements. It takes time for the body to heal itself and for a noticeable difference to be seen after microneedling. Multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results.
Note that microneedling also prepares the skin to better receive creams and other topical skincare products, since it opens channels in the surface that allow beneficial ingredients to penetrate deeper.
OTHER SKIN REJUVENATION TREATMENTS IN THE PHILADELPHIA AREA
For patients who are seeking more strategies for improving the tone, texture, and appearance of the skin, Chapin Aesthetics also provides more non-invasive options. Some of the most effective solutions include chemical peels (which involve applying a solution to prompt shedding of the outer, damaged layer of skin), microdermabrasion (a method of gently “sanding” away dead skin from the surface), and HydraFacial® (a multistep technique to exfoliate and nourish the skin). BBL®/MOXI is a gentle, light-based skin rejuvenation treatment that combines two types of energy to address spots and more.
