A Conversation with Dr. Chapin
As a child and a student, I was always fascinated with how the body works. I truly loved all my rotations in medical school: pediatrics, cardiology, and even psychiatry. I could literally picture myself being happy choosing any of these as a career. But it was surgery that I found most fulfilling.
It seemed like in surgery I was really doing something for my patients, providing a service and seeing outcomes. I was first exposed to plastic surgery in my second year of general surgery residency. We performed a breast reconstruction following mastectomy in tandem with a plastic surgeon. He literally made a beautiful breast out of a patient’s abdominal tissue. In addition to being talented and well trained, the plastic surgeon seemed incredibly happy with his life. The surgery was captivating, involving the rearrangement of body parts to form an artful form. From that day on, I was hooked. I decided to become a plastic surgeon.
It goes without saying that I love the immediate feedback of creating something aesthetically beautiful each time I operate. But the most fulfilling parts of my work are things that I would’ve never foreseen when I first decided to become a plastic surgeon, including making people feel happy, learning how to be a good leader, and being part of an exceptional team. It sounds cliché, but these are the reasons I look forward to coming to work each day.
Well, I know firsthand how hard it is to seek help for something that you don’t like about yourself. It might sound silly, but I hated my upper eyelids for most of my adult life. They sagged, obstructed my vision, and made me look older than I felt. It was ironic that I felt a stigma to even try to get them corrected surgically. I waited years to address it. It literally felt vain. So much so, that I almost walked out of the plastic surgeon’s office without being seen when I first went for a consultation. I eventually had the procedure with a colleague. It was a breeze, and I wish I had done it sooner.
Our center is welcoming, clean, and aesthetically pleasing. We want patients to feel comfortable within our office. We know coming in for a consultation is usually the hardest part for patients. Our clinical area is downstairs whereas our med spa rooms are upstairs. We have an elevator for patients as well.
Also, I’m a music junkie. I handpick the eclectic playlist that plays continuously in the office.
